Comments on: How do you say HTML?

Is there a distinction between pronunciation of aitch/haitch between a broad Aussie accent (‘Strine’ – think Steve Irwin, Paul Hogan, Shane Warne) and ‘General Australian’ (think Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman) and ‘refined Australian?’ (Maybe Sam Neill, but then he is a Kiwi [ :-) a true refined Aussie] BTW, Sam Neill’s brother was (maybe still?) a professor of English at Auckland Uni, and has a distinctly refined NZ accent)

And what about regional variations? I know Queenslanders can pronounce some words clearly differently to people from Victoria and NSW?

As a ‘fush and chups’ Kiwi living in the UK, I find I use aitch/haitch inconsistently…

I say haitch. But then I am an Aussie. I always have an moment of discomfort when for example I read ‘an HTML page.’ I forget for a second that most of the world says aitch. I also have other linguistic irritations, like when Americans say ‘two thousand ten,’ as opposed to ‘two thousand and ten.’

Interesting to know that the ‘haitch’ pronunciation is prevalent in Australia.

It is also used in several parts of Southern India, but the ‘aitch’ pronunciation is the most widely used one.

I know there is no right or wrong with the ‘h’ pronunciation but, I just have to say, you’re wrong.
